Caren Sturmer

Artist’s Statement

After a fifteen-year hiatus I’m currently working on a self-retrospective of my images from the years 1965-1998. Sometime around 1998 I stopped shooting film and ceased darkroom work, not wanting to be called a photographer any more.

In 2012 my son talked me into having an Instagram account, which led to my slipping back into a photographer’s life and back into my abandoned darkroom. I’m re-examining my thirty years of contact sheets with older eyes, an older heart, an older mind; viewing images seen by myself in my 20s, 30s and 40s with seventy-two year old eyes; seeing again in a new way.
