“There is a band in Heaven they play my favorite song” — Talking Heads
My name is Juniper Esler. I’m a 27-year-old transgender woman who started my life as a woman on my 25th birthday, which is also when I met my partner Liz and moved away from Portland Oregon, where I had lived my entire life up till that point, to New Jersey.
I’m a high school dropout who has loved art and music all of my life. Around two years ago when I started to transition I also created a daily Internet comic called “Close Your Eyes, Look at the Mountains” which quickly became popular on Tumblr and Twitter and now has around 50,000 followers.
The name of the comic is inspired by an eye relaxation technique I learned when I worked in call centers and stared at computer screens all day. My comics are an abstract refraction of my daily life and are inspired by some classic strips I read as a kid such as Calvin & Hobbes and Garfield, as well as some newer animated material like Adventure Time and Steven Universe.
Although I have made my name in an online space through comics, creating folk music was my primary passion up until recently. I’ve played guitar and sang since I was thirteen, and I just put out a new EP titled Six Wooden Walls which I am more proud of than anything I’ve ever created.
Juniper Esler is a Portland, Oregon native. Now she lives in New Jersey where she creates art and music. You can find Juniper on Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter. Stream her new EP Six Wooden Walls on Spotify and Bandcamp.
